Coverage for modifications depends on an insurer’s approval. Insurers generally accept modifications that improve safety, are purely cosmetic, or do not significantly increase risk.
For example, modifications, such as neon underglow lighting, nitrous oxide systems, and excessively tinted windows, will not be eligible for coverage. However, some modifications, such as performance upgrades or significant bodywork changes, can be accepted but may result in higher premiums or adjusted excess amounts.
The most common modifications that an insurer may accept are:
- Cosmetic modifications such as alloy wheels, body kits, spoilers, custom paintwork, wraps, tinted windows, and decals.
- Performance enhancers include turbochargers, superchargers, cold air intakes, performance exhaust systems, brake upgrades, suspension changes, and engine remaps.
- Interior upgrades include custom seats, upholstery, modified dashboards, and upgraded sound or entertainment systems.
- Safety modifications, including parking sensors and upgraded brakes.
If you’re unsure if your vehicle’s modifications are covered, don’t worry. Our teams will review the coverage suitable for your vehicle during the insurance application process.
