Does catering van insurance cover my stock and food?

Catering van insurance can cover your stock – the food and drink you use to conduct your business – if you opt for a policy with contents and stock cover.

Contents and stock cover encompasses equipment, utensils, and, of course, the stock that you carry in your van. It provides protection in the event of loss or damage to your food and equipment.

Some insurers on our panel even go the extra mile to include frozen food cover in their mobile catering policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any catering vans you cannot cover?

Some policies will have a limitation on the value of the vehicles they can cover, but not all of them. We’ll be able to find the coverage you need as most of our insurers don’t have this limitation.

Do you have a limit on how many employees I can cover with liability insurance?

We have insurers on our panel that can offer liability coverage for an unlimited number of employees.

Just let us know during the application process that your priority will be covering a large workforce with unlimited coverage, and we’ll do the hard work of tracking down suitable policies.

Why can’t I have standard van insurance for my catering van?

Standard van insurance does not provide enough coverage for a catering van. This type of policy generally covers the vehicle itself but not its modifications, such as built-in appliances.

Instead, caterers should opt for non-traditional commercial van insurance that covers a modified vehicle and the risks facing their business operations.

Catering van insurance protects your van, cooking equipment, and stock if an insurable event occurs.

It can also include tailored employers’ liability insurance, which is legally required if you have staff, and public liability to safeguard your business from compensation claims.

What’s more, you can have additional elements in your cover focusing on business interruptions and the cancellation of events you’re working at. These types of risks just aren’t considered with traditional van insurance.

Does a burger van need planning permission?

Whether you need planning permission for your burger van depends on the location and duration of your business operation.

If you plan to trade on private land, you usually need planning permission from the local council. For pitches on public land, you need to get a street trading licence from the council.

However, you will need to register your business with the local council 28 days before your first day of trading anyway. Your local council will want to monitor food businesses in the area and make sure your business complies with food safety rules.

How much liability insurance do I need for a catering van?

The liability insurance you need for a catering van depends on the size of your business and its operations. Additionally, policies will vary, so this also depends on the insurer you choose.

Legally, you’ll need a minimum of £5 million employer’s liability, but if you have a larger team, this figure may need to be higher. Some policies will even provide cover for an unlimited number of employees.

In terms of product and public liability, you can usually opt for cover up to £5 million. However, with some policies from our insurers, we can exceed this and cover up to as much as £10,000,000.
