Overview

When your work involves an extended period on the road removing and recovering vehicles, you’ll face many risks that the average driver just won’t deal with.

At One Sure, we understand that your insurance coverage should be as unique to your business needs. We’ll use our insurance expertise to guide you towards getting insured with the ideal amount of coverage for your recovery truck at the most competitive price on the market.

What insurance do I need for a vehicle recovery truck?

The type of insurance you need for your recovery truck depends on the type of work you do, as these handy vehicles are used in various professions.

The most common type of insurance needed for recovery truck drivers is motor trade insurance, as they are typically classed as being in the motor trade industry.

When choosing recovery truck insurance, you can pick from the following types of road risk coverage:

  • Third-Party Only: Provides coverage for damages or injuries caused to third parties involved in an accident but does not cover damage to your own vehicle.
  • Third-Party, Fire, and Theft: Offers the same coverage as Third-Party Only but also includes protection against fire damage and theft of the recovery truck.
  • Comprehensive: Provides coverage for third-party damages, fire, theft, and also covers accidental damage to your own recovery truck.
  • Motor Trade Combined: Combined motor trade insurance is the most extensive policy on the market. When opting for a combined motor trade policy, our team will ensure that you receive custom cover for your business. We can offer policies that include third-party liability on public property and roads, protections for stock, equipment and tools, along with all vehicles on your business premises.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicle is a recovery truck classed as?

A recovery truck is classified as a commercial vehicle. It usually falls under the category of ‘special purpose vehicles’ or ‘special types vehicles’.

A road recovery vehicle with a maximum weight of less than 25,000 kg is taxable as a special vehicle at the same rate as a basic goods vehicle. One with a maximum weight greater than 25,000 kg is taxable at 2.5 times the basic goods vehicle rate.

What licence do I need to drive a recovery truck?

To drive a recovery truck, you need a valid driving licence appropriate for the weight and category of the vehicle. The specific licence requirements depend on the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of the recovery truck. Here are the main licence categories relevant to driving a recovery truck:

Category B licence: A standard Category B driving licence allows you to drive vehicles with a maximum authorized mass (MAM) up to 3,500 kilograms (3.5 tonnes) and carry up to eight passengers (excluding the driver). This licence is sufficient for operating smaller recovery trucks, including those with a GVW of 3.5 tonnes or less.

Category C1 licence: If you plan to drive a recovery truck with a GVW between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes, you would need a Category C1 driving licence. This licence covers medium-sized vehicles and allows you to drive vehicles weighing up to 7.5 tonnes.

Category C licence: For larger recovery trucks with a GVW exceeding 7.5 tonnes, a Category C driving licence is required. This licence permits you to drive rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, including heavy recovery trucks.

It’s important to note that in addition to the appropriate driving licence, you may also need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) if you are using the recovery truck for commercial purposes. The CPC is a qualification that ensures professional drivers meet specific standards for road safety and working hours.
